How Online Coaching Works: Victoria’s Story

When I am developing my programs, I always struggle to know what to call my online coaching service, because it’s not exactly “fitness” coaching. Yes, there are workouts, yes, there are nutrition plans, and  – yes – there is 24/7 online group support, but I like to think that what participants experience is beyond just “fitness” or just “nutrition.”

Yes, you lose weight, possibly up to 10 pounds. Yes, you get more toned and fit. Yes, you’ll probably have to buy new clothes. But you could do that on any effective workout and eating program that you hit hard for four weeks. When it comes to short-term weight loss, it almost doesn’t matter what you do. You can do anything for one, two, three, or even four weeks, through white-knuckling, deprivation, and restriction.

… But how do you quantify permanently shifting your relationship with food and exercise? How do you describe healing your perception of your body image and confidence? How do you fit this kind of spiritual, mental, and emotional change into a neat little package?

(P.S. if anyone has a genius name idea for my online coaching service, I’m certainly open to suggestions!)

It’s easier to explain it by telling a story, than by describing the features of the program. Let me tell you Victoria’s story.

Victoria’s Online Coaching Group Experience

Victoria, like many people who participate in one of my online coaching groups, at first seemed to have multiple obstacles in her way to a healthier lifestyle. She had unpredictable work hours, she loved carbs (she’s Italian!), and she didn’t have the budget for a luxury gym membership or a personal trainer.

Looking for a solution, Victoria joined my online coaching group in September, and she lost 6-7 pounds and two pants sizes… in just four weeks, all on her own.

It sounds too good to be true, right? Keep in mind that, in my groups, the experience is streamlined for convenience, independence, and sustainability – we never meet in person, there are no weekly webinars, no synchronous communications like a phone call, and no set routine that every must adhere to. Instead, the group functions on your individual schedule – you do the workouts when you want, you design your eating plan the way you want, and you dip into the online group when you want. It fits into your life, the way it is.

So how do you get those radical results by being “plugged into” a Facebook group that has no special products, no benchmarks for membership, and no requirements for network marketing?

Victoria experienced the benefits of the “three R’s” of my online group coaching design.

The Three R’s of My Online Coaching Groups

Relationships

Even though we never meet in person, my coaching groups develop relationships among the members. I moderate and teach, but much of the discussion is driven by participants in the group. Members get to know each other, support each other, encourage each other, hold each other accountable, and share ideas.

Best of all, because it’s online, you can join in the discussion any time of day or night. … And any member will tell you, it’s a lot of fun.

Magic happens in relationships. No matter how independent you are, how rebellious, how individual – being connected to other people on your health and wellness journey will make a profound difference in your level of results. Whether you choose to post several times a day or once a week, you will experience the benefits of being supported by others.

When you are in one of my groups, you are not alone.

Routine

In my groups, there are no real dietary “rules” as there are in Whole30 or WeightWatchers. Why is that? Wouldn’t it be easier to lose weight and to manage the group if there were strict rules to adhere to?

While there are benefits to formats like that (and I do have strong suggestions about nutritional principles), my deep belief is that routines are more powerful than rules. Rules will get challenged in social situations and in travel and can make you feel deprived or overly restricted. Habits, on the other hand, will sustain you through life changes and give you flexibility and decision-making power.

What does it matter if you are not “allowed” to eat bagels, if bagels are in your office conference room and you are in the habit of dipping into them every day? While I do offer a nutritional structure, a recipe book, and a meal prep format that will change your life, the primary focus of my coaching is developing habits and rituals that make your own personal rules meaningful and repeatable.

Renewal

My online coaching is more than a DietBet or 21-Day Fix. My program doesn’t only tackle your outer behaviors (it does that, too) – it also addresses your inner thought processes and emotional constructs around your body image, food behaviors, and self-care.

When we keep doing behaviors that lead to results that we don’t like – like overeating, skipping exercise, drinking too much, and putting on too much weight – we are not just acting out of habit. We are also acting on our beliefs about the world and about ourselves. My coaching group offers a safe place to re-think some of your automatic assumptions about weight, fitness, femininity, and health, and you have the chance to re-orient yourself in the world in a way that benefits you. You get the results you want, but it’s a lot more than four weeks of dieting down. It’s only the beginning, because you have the chance to change from the inside out and remain in the driver’s seat permanently.

Victoria, when she joined my online coaching group, didn’t just get a free download of my cookbook and four weeks of curriculum. She experienced the valuable, transformational benefits of joining others on a journey, re-designing her habits, and revitalizing her beliefs about exercise, eating, and her body. This is more than a quick fix or shortcut. This is the beginning of a journey of lifelong empowerment.

Still unsure if online coaching is the right fit for you, or want to know more specifics? Keep in mind that all you need to succeed is an active Facebook account and a positive attitude. I will help you with the rest!
